Common questions
Why are 12.9 socket screws dark and oily, not shiny?
Grade 12.9 is alloy steel that is quenched in oil and tempered; the "self-colour" dark finish is the natural oxide from that heat-treatment, kept lightly oiled. Plating high-strength 12.9 risks hydrogen embrittlement, so self-colour or black oxide is preferred.
